Group Structure

 

 

For the initial stages of the project three main management positions were identified. These were: Project Manager, Financial Manager and Communications Manager. Group members took turns at filling these roles. This allowed each member to experience each role and enabled the group to decide which member was best suited to each. Towards the project half way point, further roles were defined and group members were assigned permanent positions. These are shown in the table below.

The management of the project was split into two ‘levels’. The upper level (Tier 1) which includes the Project Manager, Financial Manager and Communications Manager are responsible for the ‘office’ side of the project which includes the general group conduct, direction and documentation.

 

The second level of management (Tier 2) was designed to manage the technical side of the group project. This level of management is made up of ‘Heads’ of specific technical aspects of the project. 

 

This management structure is depicted in the figure below.

Management

  • Project manager: Responsible for the scheduling and progression of the project.

 

  • Communications manager: Responsible for arranging regular group meetings and taking minutes at each meeting.

 

  • Budget manager: Responsible for management of group expenditure. 

  • Head of heating system design: Responsible for the finalised design, component ordering and construction of the heating and airflow systems.

 

  • Head of separation system design: Responsible for the finalised design, component ordering and construction of the separation system.

 

  • Head of rig construction: Responsible for the commissioning of the rig as a whole. This includes the reconstruction/modification of the existing rig and the integration of the heating and separation systems.

 

  • Head of safety and rig operation: Responsible for the safety considerations to be made before the rig is ‘powered up’. This will include the responsibility for final risk assessment and safety check before the rig is operated. 

 

  • Head of testing: Responsible for the planning and delivery of the experimental programme used to investigate the effectiveness of the rig design.

 

  • Head of website design: Responsible for the design and construction of the project webpage.
